Lecture Session:
Introduction of synchrotron-radiation-based techniques: from fundamentals to applications

This session is aimed to serve a rapid starting up knowledge towards possible applications of synchrotron-radiation-based characterizations of engineering materials. It starts from a brief introduction of synchrotron radiation principles and instrumentations, continues with radiation protections in large-scale facilities, and explores commonly used techniques of photoelectron spectroscopy, high-energy x-ray diffraction, pair distribution functions extracted from XRD, x-ray emission spectroscopy, and photoemission electron microscopy. The materials are mainly oriented at case studies to solve research questions raised in materials science. The course is specifically targeted audiences with interests of bulk materials characterizations but without too much time in survey of literatures. The university level knowledge of physics and materials science is needed but not mandatory. This session will be given in contact mode. It is also suitable for master and Ph.D students in the field of materials engineering, physics, and chemistry.
